Microneedling (collagen induction therapy) creates controlled micro-injuries in the skin to trigger wound healing and collagen synthesis. Needle depth determines which skin layer is treated — from the stratum corneum (0.25 mm) to the deep reticular dermis (2.5 mm) and directly affects results, downtime, and safety.
Using the wrong depth or treating too frequently can impair healing rather than improve results. This calculator maps your skin concerns and experience level to a clinical protocol with the correct needle depth, session frequency, course length, and recovery expectations.

Needle depth and skin layers
0.25 mm reaches only the stratum corneum. There is no real collagen induction — the benefit is improved serum absorption and mild texture refinement. This depth can be used 2–3 times per week at home with no recovery time.
0.5 mm reaches the papillary dermis, where collagen induction begins. This depth addresses fine lines, enlarged pores, mild acne scars, and hyperpigmentation. It is the most versatile depth for consumer skin goals and can be used every 1–2 weeks.
1.0 mm and above reach the reticular dermis and produce meaningful collagen synthesis. Yale Medicine recommends 3–5 monthly or biweekly treatments at this depth. These depths require clinic administration, topical anaesthetic, and full recovery between sessions.
Why treatment frequency matters
Collagen remodelling takes 4–6 weeks after each microneedling session at depths of 1.0 mm or greater. Treating more frequently than recommended does not accelerate results — it prevents the skin from completing the wound-healing cycle and can lead to inflammation, prolonged redness, and inferior collagen formation.
At depths of 1.5 mm and above, the NIH literature recommends 4–6 week intervals with 3–5 sessions total for scar treatment. Body treatments (stretch marks, cellulite) at 2.0–2.5 mm may use 6–8 week intervals.
